This March Leeds Playhouse is to stage Shakespeare's searing tragedy of murder and revenge Hamlet. This contemporary retelling of the psychological drama is directed by Leeds Playhouse Associate Director Amy Leach, with actor Tessa Parr in the title role.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark. Princess Hamlet discovers her world turned upside down on her return home from university to attend the funeral of her father. With her country on the brink of war and the royal family plagued with corruption, afflicted Hamlet embarks on a treacherous journey to avenge her father’s brutal murder, where both her sanity and the security of the state are threatened.

Actor Tessa Parr follows her extraordinary portrayal of Juliet in the Playhouse’s 2017 production of Romeo & Juliet. She will be joined on stage by the full Leeds Playhouse Ensemble Company including two new actors Simona Bitmate as Ophelia, and Crystal Condie as Horatio. The professional company will be joined by a company of young actors from Leeds Playhouse’s youth programmes.

Amy Leach is reunited with designer Hayley Grindle for Hamlet, continuing a long and collaborative relationship that has created the acclaimed productions Romeo & JulietRoad and more recently A Christmas Carol for Leeds Playhouse. Joining the creative team are Josh Carr as Lighting Designer (Everyone’s Talking About Jamie, Sheffield Theatres), Alexandra Faye Braithwaite as Sound Designer (Love Lies Bleeding, Print Room), Kate Waters as Fight Director (King Lear, West End), and Charlotte Bickley as Trainee Sound Designer (Dinner 18:55, Leeds Playhouse).
