The Leeds Hunters - 18th February 2017

Last Saturday on the 18th of February, the Leeds Hunters were set to play the also recently formed Castleford MA in what may be deemed one of the most inclusive matches of rugby union played. With both teams drawing in a whole range of players, most of whom were new to the idea of playing rugby or who hadn’t played in a long time, there was no way of telling how this match was going to go. Nevertheless, having lost our first match only three weeks before, we were determined to redeem ourselves and prove that we were a force to be reckoned with.

After making our way onto the pitch with a mixture of nerves and excitement, the Leeds Hunters got off to a strong start, and it wasn’t long before we scored our first try. With this small victory we kept on going, but at no point did our opposition falter. However, it wasn’t long until a casualty on our side occurred, with our vice-captain suffering a nasty injury to the foot, ending with him hopping off the pitch. Left with one of our most experienced players cheering from the side-lines, we powered through, managing to play an impressive first half.

Feeling confident with ourselves, we continued to push through the second half against Castleford MA who fought back harder with every passing minute, reminding us they were not about to give up that easily. Then, before we knew it the final whistle was blown and the Leeds Hunters emerged triumphant.

After congratulating Castleford MA for a brilliant match and commending them for their fighting spirit and generous hosting, we were left feeling pretty smug with ourselves. Despite it only being three weeks since our first match, it was amazing to see the improvement in everyone, both individually and as part of a team. Even better was seeing how the Leeds Hunters had grown stronger with every practice and seeing it on the pitch. So, with our first victory under our belts, there’s no telling what’s in store for the Leeds Hunters, but I can assure you that whatever it is, we’re ready.
