There are few drinks as on-trend as Tequila. The Wine and Spirit Trade Association recently reported UK sales have surged over the last two years, particularly of premium brands, rising by 37% to £173million in 2016. It’s become so popular that some of the biggest names in entertainment have their own Tequila brands, such as Justin Timberlake’s ‘Sauza 901’, George Clooney’s ‘Casamigos’ and Sean “Diddy” Combs ‘DeLeon’. It’s an incredibly versatile drink, forming the basis for some of the best-loved cocktails out there such as the classic Margarita, or the Tequila Sunrise, while the Tequila ‘slammer‘ has made most of us pull an unforgettable face at one time or another on a big night out. A whole ritual has built up around drinking Tequila, however, it’s also a drink with a rich cultural heritage.
The Tequila Festival organiser, Nathan Reed comments,
“Tequila is a drink that is associated with a great party all across the world, however, it is also now being recognised as a more sophisticated, crafted drink with a rich variety of flavours. Tequila has a very strong cultural identity, so we wanted to bring this to life and put on a festival that celebrates the remarkable diversity and history of this wonderful drink. The Tequila Festival will be an unmissable party, full of music and entertainment, and of course, a chance to taste the best Tequilas under the sun.”
The Tequila Festival will celebrate the Mexican roots of Tequila, showcasing the huge variety of tastes cultivated from the Agave plant. It will recognise the role of Tequila in the Mexican fiesta, with traditional Mexican dancing and the spectacle of the Mariachi band. Tequila is also used in Mexican cooking and there will be a wide range of specialist food available to help soak up the drink and inspire the tastebuds.
However, The Tequila Festival is not just about heritage and throughout the day, the party will also reflect the modern popularity of Tequila with DJs spinning house music with Latin flavours to get everyone dancing, breath-taking acrobats and performers, and colourful processions inspired by Mexico’s famous Day of the Dead celebrations.
With tickets selling fast for the London debut event as well as for The Tequila Festivals coming up in Leeds, Manchester, Cardiff, Newcastle, Brighton, Birmingham, Glasgow, Bristol, Swansea, Lincoln, Exeter, Cheltenham, Belfast, Dublin, and Edinburgh, it looks like the UK has firmly declared Tequila as its favourite drink.
