Leeds Bisexuals - LGBT+ Business Alliance Launch
LGBT+ Business Alliance Launch - Emily @ Leeds Bi Group
After months of behind the scenes work, Leeds LGBT+ Business Alliance was launched earlier this month at Asda House in Leeds city centre. As well as a delicious buffet, the evening included speeches from Blacks Solicitors LLP, APN UK (a business group which includes Leeds venues Bar Fibre and The Viaduct), the Diversity and Community Engagement Manager from DWF and the Deputy Leader of Leeds City Council.
The event helped show that a number of businesses across the city are coming together to support and engage with the LGBT+ community. Their aims include establishing mentoring and peer support both internally and between businesses, establishing funding and other help (such as advice and practical assistance) and a city wide “charter mark” for LGBT+ inclusivity.
As an attendee, I had the opportunity to meet people from some of the businesses involved and feel very encouraged by their enthusiasm. It is great to see local businesses embracing and going beyond their corporate responsibility. They have a chance to make a big difference.
My hope for the work, both in their businesses and in the wider context of their alliance, is that they will embrace the whole of the LGBT+ umbrella; ensuring support and inclusion of all letters of the acronym as bi+, trans and others such as intersex, asexual etc can often be erased.
Though the LGBT+ Business Alliance has now been launched, they are still open and calling for more local businesses to get involved. If you are a local business and would like more details about the Alliance or to get involved, please contact Rob Wilson on Inclusiveleeds@leeds.gov.uk.
