Thank You From St George's Crypt
The clients of St George’s Crypt, Leeds renowned homeless charity, will be thanking the city for providing a great Christmas. The charity put out a call for reverse advent and the city has truly stood up and taken note.
Reverse advent asks for people to put something aside every day in the run-up to Christmas and, at the end, donate what they have put aside to charity. The Crypt has received generous donations of clothes, toiletries, chocolates and dried goods from a number of corporate agencies, workers getting together and individuals rallying their communities and the giving is set to continue.
St George’s Crypt offers homeless accommodation 365 days a year, a pay-as-you-feel lunch time service to between 50 and 100 individuals, alongside emergency bed spaces for up to 50. They will be offering meals on Christmas Day and Boxing Day ensuring the most vulnerable and marginalised do not miss out. As winter comes in more people come to use the service as the need for warmth, accommodation and sustenance is paramount.
Cheryl Harrington, Lead Fundraiser said ‘Whilst there is always a need for continuous funding to keep everything ticking over, receiving these amazing donations adds an element of luxury to a time that can be very hard for our clients.’
Matthew Nice, Operations Director said ‘It can be a hard time when families are not always around to offer support, loved ones may not be around and clients cannot afford all the luxury of Christmas. We try to assist people with community, love, a friendly atmosphere and the presents given by the city as a whole, really helps.’
‘People have rallied around at work; they’ve really picked up on the concept with their work colleagues and run with it! It’s been like a second Harvest.’
